Here are some of the films I watched in December.
18th Dec - Eyes Wide Shut
This is not the erotic thriller that most critics claim. Instead it is a story of money, power and moral corruption told through the male paranoia and jealousy-fueled nightmare of Bill, a wealthy Manhattan doctor. Despite the constant presence of sex, this is a surprisingly un-erotic experience. It’s a film less about sex and more about class and money as people are repeatedly bought and sold at the whim of the obscenely rich. Bill (Tom Cruise) finds himself an exploited asset - a person that can be bought and bullied by the top one-percenters in the same way they exploit prostitutes for their masked orgies. Cruise was perfectly cast in this film, giving one of his greatest performances.
Christmas is used as a metaphor throughout this film, as it is an ‘orgy for consumption’. The use of Christmas lights in every scene of this helps reinforce the notion that the film is much more about money than sex.
In this film women are reduced to sexual objects, even Alice (Nicole Kidman), an educated woman and mother. Despite her single purpose within the story, Kidman delivered a sensational performance.
Of course, being a Kubrick film, the cinematography and camerawork is exceptional. A truly underrated masterpiece in my eyes.
This review took snippets from this review by Adam Cook who has a much better way with words than I do lol.
Can’t believe it took me this
long to watch Die Hard – it truly is the greatest Christmas film of all time!
Before watching, I had reservations
about this film as sometimes action movies tend to prioritise stunts over clever
writing which can result in half-written story-lines and under-developed
characters. Boy was I wrong! This film was unpredictable and smart, with well-rounded characters and clever dialogue with bad-ass delivery from both Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman.
