New year, new you?

Whether you buy into the new year resolution trend or not, we can all agree that we hope there are bigger and better things in store for us in the new year. So, I felt it was a fitting time to discuss how to set realistic and attainable goals in order to get the most out of 2020.

This article is inspired by this Brian Tracy video which I will be referring to throughout this post.

What do you really want?

Step one is deciding what you want to achieve. You can create goals for a variety of things from career, personal growth, relationships, finance or education.

Think carefully about the goals you are setting and be honest with yourself.  What do you really want? What kind of person do you want to be? What does your idea of success and happiness entail? Make sure to be specific and don’t create goals with the intentions of pleasing others as ultimately you will struggle to find motivation.

Knowing what you want will allow you to be open to opportunities which will help you to achieve your goal and attract like-minded people.

“If you don’t set clear specific goals then you can’t fail to achieve them because they’re so vague”

Brian Tracy’s three goal method: In the next 30 seconds, write down your three most important goals in life. This is a good place to start as these are probably an accurate representation of what you really want.

Putting pen to paper

Step two is writing down each specific goal. Write down your main goals then break these down into every wee thing needing done to achieve this.  Be very detailed in what is needing done; identify possible obstacles and how to overcome them and research which skills/knowledge are needed to complete each task. This will make your goals less overwhelming and being able to tick off each task will create a sense of achievement and motivation.

“Each minute spent on planning saves 10 minutes on execution”

Crunch time

Step three is to create deadlines to achieve these goals as planning ahead is key! Sort each task into chronological order and order of importance. Setting a time frame can motivate and challenge you but don’t sweat if don’t achieve a goal within the deadline as you can just set a new one.

“There are no unreasonable goals, only unreasonable deadlines”

My goals

So I thought I may as well share some of my goals with you and please feel free to do the same. My main goal for the near future is to move out in 2021. In order to do this, I have worked out exactly how much money I need to save and how I will achieve this in the time frame.

Another one of my goals I have is in relation to my health and fitness. Instead of saying I want to get fit I have broken this down into four areas: strength, stamina, flexibility and eating well. I have created a detailed workout plan which I am hoping to share in more detail throughout this year.

Happy new year x
