Transmission: Netflix and quarantine

Like most of the world, the UK has been in lockdown for four weeks now. During this time, I kept myself occupied by watching all the films that have been on my Netflix watchlist for ages and have never gotten around to watching.

Okja

A thought-provoking and emotional story of a girl and her pet ‘super pig’ who are torn apart by the Mirando corporation. The film explores themes of anti-capitalism and the ethics of the meat industry. Personally, I found some characters a little cringy but Ahn Seo-hyun and Tilda Swinton both gave fantastic performances. Not my favourite Bong Joon-Ho film but still a good watch!

Uncut Gems

A character study on an eccentric jeweller with big chaotic energy. This is the second Safdie brothers film I have watched (the first being Good Time which is a must see). In their signature style, the film is tense, fast-paced and claustrophobic. All the acting was impeccable, I was pleasantly surprised with Adam Sandler’s performance. I highly recommend! You won’t ever catch me gambling after watching this lol.

I also recommend reading this review on Uncut Gems which explores the anti-capitalist themes of the film:

“The protagonist should be seen as an embodiment of capitalism, and as such the film is basically an indictment of the irrationality, short-sightedness and unsustainability of the economic system in which we live… The film effectively puts the viewer through the rat-race insanity of the capitalist system and reveals it for what it is - doomed for destruction.” - Daniel Morley

Roma

This film is absolutely stunning! The cinematography is outstanding, the long shots Alfonso Cuarón uses are so impressive! The sound design is also extraordinary and really allows you to get immersed in this world. This is a moving story of Cleo a live-in housekeeper in Colonia Roma. The film is also said to be a semi-autobiography on Cuarón’s childhood. All the acting was great, Yalitza Aparicio gave an amazing performance. I cannot recommend enough but prepare to cry a lot!

Death of Stalin

Omg I did not expect to love this as much as I did! This is funny, well written and very classically British (which I was not expecting when first going into it lol). The film also looked great which was surprising as comedies generally aren't the prettiest films. Overall a great watch and I highly recommend!

Mid 90’s

A nostalgic coming-of-age film. This is a decent film considering this is Jonah Hill’s first time directing. The actors all had great chemistry and there were some funny moments. However, the plot was non existing. This film is the definition of style over substance lol but still enjoyable!

True Romance

Tony Scott and Quentin Tarantino make a surprisingly good duo. This film was kitschy and fun. There were some great actors from Christopher Walken’s playing a mobster to Brad Pitt as a stoner lol. The film definitely has flaws but is still fun to watch.

Tiger King

I’d be very surprised if you haven’t watched or even heard of Tiger King. This is a docuseries which explores the insane world of the big cat breading industry. You couldn’t write the shit that happens in this. I won’t explain the plot as I think it is better to go into this not knowing anything (if that’s still possible with the amount of memes online about this). The series has the same energy as David Farrier’s Tickled – an all-time favourite documentary of mine - every time you think it couldn’t get worse, it does. If you haven’t seen already check it out!

Thanks for reading!
